The holidays are coming up and there are many events to look forward to this time of year. While you’re probably familiar with Black Friday Sales and Christmas Specials, there’s another date you should keep in mind: Small Business Saturday. The growing shopping holiday is held the Saturday after Thanksgiving (this year it falls on November 28). It’s an original event that gives you another opportunity to stock up for gift giving, while also letting you support indie shops in your community.
In most, if not all, of the other promotional dates, big businesses have the edge. It’s refreshing that for at least one day out of the year, small independent businesses are able to attract consumers with their own specials. One participating local event to look forward to this year is the Eagle Rock Block Party, which is held on Colorado Blvd and Eagle Rock Blvd.
We spoke with the coordinator of the Eagle Rock Block Party since its inception in 2010, Leanna Lin. Leanna got involved at the beginning when American Express wanted to really expand Small Business Saturday. It was also the year when she opened her shop Leanna Lin’s Wonderland, a boutique gift shop and art gallery space. Leanna decided to join when she saw it was a great way to bring shops together for a community event. “The first year we just did our three blocks here from Eagle Rock Blvd to Chickasaw Ave. Then, 2-3 years later there were a few boutiques down on Colorado Blvd that wanted to be a part of it, so it just kind of automatically expanded.” The event keep getting bigger and bigger every year, and for good reason. Participating businesses are added annually and the turnout seems to keep growing, too.
Each shop has its own special/promotion for the day, so you can look forward to a variety of offerings. This year, expect to see discounts of 10-20% off purchases, buy one get one free offers, cooking demos, raffles, live art, and even free refreshments and items.
What makes this year even more exciting is the inclusion of food. Other major additions to expect this year are the new Family Zone and Healthy & Fitness Zone. “The Family Zone will be behind the Green Bean at Swork Coffee. That’s always something fun for a family – with live entertainment. The Health & Fitness Zone will be focused more on health and beauty businesses,” said Leanna. You can get a sneak peak of the schedule and program below, where you can see all of the businesses and their specials.
Overall, it’s a great event to look forward to this year. Family-friendly entertainment, food, health and beauty shops…there’s really something for everyone. Even if you’re not from Eagle Rock proper, you should still venture out and support the local shops. Leanna believes that “Eagle Rock is kind of still a hidden gem, and there are a lot of great businesses here. It’s really great for families, too.” Every year, people from other nearby neighborhoods have stopped by, and the number seems to keep growing. It’s a truly inspiring event the promotes locals to come out and support the smaller shops.
